The following comments and replies from Kelly P. (a.k.a. Shake It With Kelly) are from a past post on her Shake It With Kelly Facebook Page.
Kelly’s initial Facebook post: So I got a message stating “I now understand why only fit people” come to my class. I said it is FACT that my class is conditioned…HOWEVER they, for the most part, did not come that way. Come on ladies…..TESTIFY……
Virginia L💙VE this class & love my body at 24 weeks because of it!!!
Shake It With Kelly And you are already perfect…..it’s going to be hard to improve on that…but what the hell….let’s push it anyway!!
Jobina Jo Bowers When I started your class, I was 25lbs heavier than now and extremely out of shape. I had been sitting on my ass for about 3 years prior to starting. Not to mention having a bunch of medical issues. My 1st month I thought I was going to die during and after every class. 4 months later, through hard work I’m down 25lbs and stronger physically and mentally than I have ever been in my life. So I hope the person who messaged you is reading this…there is no judgement in your classes, just the support of a group of wonderful ladies. If you keep showing up, you will get to that “conditioned ” point. Show up, do your best and most of all have fun dancing with the fabulous ladies @ Shake it with Kelly.
Shake It With Kelly Thank you….you amazing woman!!!
Dawn Schantz I can’t speak for everyone else but you are “conditioning me” towards fitness!
Shake It With Kelly And you are doing FANTASTIC!!!
Deb Moyer Started at Kelly Devlin Powell’s class happy that I was finally down to a size 14 (at one point I wore 18’s and over). Little did I know that dancing and moving like crazy with ‘Shrink It With Kelly’ would have me down 35 lbs and wearing size 4’s and 6’s! Loved your class from the very first night, and still get excited to GET THERE 4 years later. Yes, this is me, Debra E Moyer, in these photos.
Shake It With Kelly DAMN I never tire of seeing this picture of you!! You and your energy should be bottled and sold at a monthly subscription rate!! Drug companies should study you. And my true wish is that the world would know that this is a CHOICE you make everyday. If they only knew what you choose to put behind you everyday….75% would STOP BITCHING and make the choice themselves!!!
To Kelly, from Deb Moyer: Your comments above added a hop to my step; and I truly appreciate your acknowledgement of my ‘choosing happy.’

Amanda Bachman-Heintzelman I most certainly am not what I would consider fit. Now I haven’t been to a class in a while because I have the start of arthritis in my knees and it is extremely painful sometimes but would love to find the time to start regularly attending class again… I’m shocked someone would start a message like that to you, YOU ARE AMAZING!!
Shake It With Kelly Amanda please take care of yourself!! I wondered where you have been!! But please follow along and keep up and always feel part of us! You don’t always need to be there to belong!!
Lisa Luciano Pretty much no one was a runner when we started coming to class now we run 5K’s together! This class is what makes you fit!
Shake It With Kelly True story!!! Not even ME!! Thank you for your unending support!!
Beth A Trexler Here is my drivers license pic. 6 years ago I decided to make changes. Small changes turned into huge results. 4 years ago I found you and never looked back! Because of your desire to make us all live better, healthier lives. I am the most conditioned I’ve ever been! A lot of hard work, and you’ve been there every step!
Shake It With Kelly Beth…I will NEVER tire of telling you how damn beautiful you are!!!
Kristin Laudenslager When I started this class I squeezed into size 14 jeans on a good day. I was so out of shape I wheezed when I walked up hills. Class was hard at first but so fun and everyone so supportive i stuck with it. Now I’m in my best shape since high school and for the last 2 1/2 years my favorite jeans are a size 4. And I’ve made some wonderful friends, too!
Shake It With Kelly Let’s talk about how you sparkle and shine constantly….even on the month of FEBRUARY!!! You’re amazing!!
Laurel Youse Okay, so I came in fairly fit – a runner. But wanted to supplement my winter treadmill running with something else. Kristin encouraged me to give it try. (Funny as I am recalling this) I *hoped* I would at least work up a sweat. Well yeah, I did. And, this class and Kelly helped keep me fit during and after my pregnancy.
Shake It With Kelly I love these pictures so much!!! You are someone else that I am so thankful you reached out and allowed me to be closer to…I have no idea what I would do without your amazing light in my life!!
Virginia Merola Herzog I may not have had a ton of weight to lose walking into your class the first time but I was nowhere near in shape. I lost about 20 pounds total & gained muscle I had NEVER had prior. You, and your class, made me strong. I “ran” maybe 2-3 5ks before starting class, most often having to walk a lot & with nowhere near a competitive time. Conditioning from your class lead me to a 1st place finish in my age group in a race & a 3rd place in my age group in another (being the oldest in that group, btw) & finishing my first 1/2 marathon. I am in shape, NOW. But could never have said that about myself 3 years ago when I started with you. I am eternally changed outside, but more importantly, inside, because of Shake It.
Shake It With Kelly Oh that amazing game changing day when I to the front desk….FIND ME VIRGINIA!!! One of my life’s BEST FINDS!!!
Angela Hovan Seidel I used to #%@&?! you and loved it at the same time….funny still do! Xoxo You know I have gone to others and it’s just not the same… Some of those are just a walk in the park!
Shake It With Kelly Wait…WHAT?? Your cheating on me?? Ha!!! You are the added BADASS every girl needs in her friend bag!! And DANG…smoking hot!!!
Crystal Dye Reed I don’t think I look very “fit” before lol! I embraced change and believed in myself. Thanks to everyone who pushed me when I didn’t want to be pushed.
Kelly Devlin Powell was definitely one of those people!!
Shake It With Kelly Girls, you only ever need to “do you” because all of you are PERFECT!!!
Crystal….you are AMAZING!
Stephanie Smith Parisi Who isn’t tired by the end (other than Kelly?). It’s like childbirth…it’s painful, but doesn’t last forever and in the end, you have something beautiful that you can be proud of!
Shake It With Kelly Thank you!! Heck…I am tired too….but not always…most of the time I am super charged from the energy of the room from all of you!!
Julie Trebat Here’s the thing…..I think there ARE people who can’t make it through one of Kelly’s classes first time out. I definitely had to work up to it before I was successful. I didn’t blame Kelly for this situation, though, because, um….it wasn’t exactly her fault. But it did help to get started with a lot of lower intensity conditioning, like walking and hiking, as if you can’t walk for an hour, you won’t be able to dance that long!
Shake It With Kelly I disagree….I believe with my whole heart EVERY ONE can make it through….just not flat out. The problem comes when we judge ourselves too harshly and expect too much too fast. There is not quick fix with fitness…we gotta start at our own pace and keep pushing. I took myself at age 45 and 60 pounds heavier with a lifetime of couch sitting and chip eating and got myself to a 50 y old women with a resting heart rate of 52 with Zumba alone….but you gotta start slow then COMMIT to yourself to push your intensity!!!
Amy Martin Boltz Let’s also discuss the motivation behind all of it! May not be able to get there often BUT you’re always in my head to be good to myself. That is priceless!
Shake It With Kelly Awe….no place I’d rather be but IN YOUR HEAD!!! Thank you for letting me rent space in there!!!
Deb Long I thought I would die the first few classes but I loved every minute of it!!! I am having an all out war with my scale right now but am in the best shape of my life. I would never be where I am if I had not walked through that door. Kelly literally scared the crap out of me but I kept coming back!!!! I can’t imagine life without Shake It With Kelly!!!
Shake It With Kelly Ok. So, in five years I pride myself in the fact I can tell if someone’s coming back by the look on their face during class. I try to connect with new people visually during class, to make them feel noticed and accounted for and therefore gain some ownership. I feel my success rate is pretty good. Can I tell you….I totally had you pegged as a “no return” that first class! I am beyond thankful that I was wrong about that!! You are so much more than I could have ever imagined. To not have you part of us, your encouragement, your praise, your humor….your amazing energy. We would be forever “incomplete” without you!!! Shake It With Kelly and DAMN GIRL….you are HOT!!!
Deb Long Well I love every one of you lovely women and if I don’t know you yet look out cuz I just may be making my rounds!!! I have many to meet yet!!!!
Elfin L. Funguy People walk through the doors for many reasons but all with the same over-all goal. Some work hard with the best results taking hard work, determination and lifestyle change, and dedication. Kelly will become a part of your goal dedication as long as you allow her to…nothing comes quick and easy and there are people at various stages of their “goal” that attend Kelly’s classes. Whoever is making these silly statements…well likely they aren’t as goal oriented as others!
Shake It With Kelly Plain and simple….you complete me!
Sue Kleppinger Schilling I believe the purpose of an exercise class is to MAKE you fit!!!!! I think these pants were a size 16. It was years ago, but I have no doubt in my mind that without this class I would be in these pants again. It’s the constant motivation, it’s the encouragement, the healthy eating tips, the camaraderie, that keeps me the size I am now. It’s a healthy lifestyle and being with a bunch of people each week that have the same goals. It’s so much more than an exercise class, but the class DEFINITELY fulfills the purpose—to make you fit!!!!
Shake It With Kelly I am so happy to see this picture here!!! I hoped so much that you would share it one day…..people have to know and understand we all “work” for where we are. It’s not a gift. We are not “lucky”….and dammit it’s okay and downright encouraged to OWN YOUR SEXY!!! I love when you do!!
Shake It With Kelly…This is positively THE BEST THREAD EVER!!! Look at all of you and how far you all have come and how amazing you all look. This is so encouraging to so many. Thank you for putting yourselves out there!! The message I received was not intended in a negative way, it was just a matter of fact message and idea that is out there. The fact that my class is intense and the opinion is “too intense” to some. It has been said that you need to be in shape to come….I know, I have heard this, read this, been told this over the years. However I know it to be total CRAP….you go at your speed to start. I tell everyone not to come out of the gate jumping but know that I will always push you. Push you beyond that voice in your head….trust me….I know that voice is LOUD….I hear her on every run….if not for Sue I would stop running every quarter mile, not because I’m not conditioned but rather because I just wanna stop! When I see your eyes gazing out and know you are planning your “to do” list in class or chatting it up at a water break…..you are gonna get blasted! And if you don’t like it…plain and simple….I’m not your girl! If you want to look like the transformations in the above pictures….well then I will see your sweet self on Tuesday at 7 PM!!!
Jobina Jo Bowers Aww man this entire thread is so encouraging! I had no idea about you other ladies just assumed you all have always looked amazing.
Shake It With Kelly EXACTLY!!!!! That is the key here!!!! We are all paddling the same boat in this world….some days you have the short ore and others you have the long….. But we all have to just keep paddling. And damn no matter the size of my ore I will always slide in next to you and start helping you row if I see you need it…. That’s what we are, that’s what I always want us to be, women supporting women!!!! Jobina Jo Bowers, that is what makes your class so special. I have Zumba’d in many classes, being a Zin I have seen and heard some crazy mess but as I have always felt there is something real special about your group. The tone you set trickles down to everyone in your class.
Jobina Jo Bowers In Shake it with Kelly I have found a home. A place of encouragement, safety, strength, caring, understanding, acceptance and love. Love of self and love of others.
Shake It With Kelly AHHH I hear angels singing I only ever want you to bring you to class…whoever she is on that day….know that all of you will be accepted….possibly comments will be made to get over yourself….but you will be accepted!!! Ha!!
It’s difficult to believe one person could make such a difference in one’s life. Actually, not one life, but many lives. But I know such a person, and her name is Kelly Powell. Let’s go back almost 1 ½ years ago, when I was 62 lbs heavier and 100% less self confident. I knew it was time to get serious about my health, but old habits are hard to break. I heard about an exercise called Zumba, and thought it might be fun to try. What did I have to lose? (besides some pounds!) I tried a class at a local rec center, and very early into my classes, we had a substitute instructor for 2 nights….a little “energizer bunny” named Kelly. I was sure she was sent in to kill us. But after I survived 2 classes, I thought it may be worthwhile to check out her classes at IFFC. And I never looked back. I didn’t just find a Zumba instructor…I found a mentor, a confidant, a coach, a cheerleader….a friend. She told me everyday “you could do this”. She complimented me when the pounds came off and she encouraged me to keep trying when they didn’t.
She shared her own life with me and welcomed me in. She made me feel so much better about myself than I had in a long time, until all of a sudden, I felt so good about myself all the time. She helped me to achieve a goal that I thought was unattainable and she gave me the strength and inspiration to reach that goal. Today, I not only like how I look, but I know how much healthier I am. But I am not the only one who could be writing these words. Kelly has helped so many of us to become healthier, to like ourselves again, to “be good to ourselves”. She has an uncanny ability to pay attention to each of us…usually more than 100 at a time, as if we were the only other person in the room. She knows if we look tired, she mentions if we have a new shirt, she notices if we seem down. I feel such joy to be part of her class 3 times a week, I can only imagine how she feels, watching all of us each class. And Kelly is FUN…..and funny! She makes us laugh each and every class. She is so upbeat and she’s not afraid to laugh at herself. She embraces every moment of life, and pushes us to do the same. I never thought exercise could be so much fun!!!!When Kelly won The American Heart Association’s Woman of Heart….all of our hearts were proud. Kelly not only strengthens our physical heart, but our emotional one as well. And I only hope she realizes how important she has become to so many of us. I want to say THANK YOU Kelly….for helping me become who I am today.
And I promise to be good to myself each day.
It’s my 2 year Zumba-anniversary at IFFC! Wow–I used to sit in my car until exactly the time class started so I wouldn’t feel as awkward waiting among this sea of women I did not know & was afraid to approach. I’d stand in the back & often avoid eye contact with this crazy woman in the center who I was afraid would dance all up on me if I did! Then I slowly started to feel more confident, slowly started to inch my way up row by row, slowly started introducing myself and being approached by others who did the same.
Fast forward 2 years and class & this group of women are my FAMILY. The love and support we have for one another is unmatched. And now I’m front row, feel amazing, strong & capable, and love that crazy woman in the center for all her antics, no longer afraid to make eye contact but rather always ready to have a good booty shake or show off my moves.
It’s feels good to have committed to something that has made me a better woman but most importantly, allowed me to show the world the woman I am. Thank you to all of you, & to you Kelly Devlin Powell for all you do–words aren’t enough.
Dear Kelly, I want to share with you that it has been 6 months that I’ve been doing Zumba with you and I feel like a new person!
I have lost 25 lbs and dropped a few pants sizes, lab levels are so much better, (except for thyroid), off another medicine and I have meet some wonderful people. God brought you into my life and I’m very grateful for it!
From the bottom of my heart thank you! Julia
Going thru A LOT of personal issues, I found myself weighing more that I ever have and also very depressed. I could not bear to even put a smile on my face. But last summer I saw an infomercial for ZUMBA and purchased the DVD’s and started to work out at home. After doing this for about 3 months, I was still in the same funk and really not losing much weight.A very DEAR friend, Wendy S. who I knew attended Zumba classes at IFFC kept after me about going with her and I finally went! That day saved my life and now I am taking 3-4 classes a week. I am not the same person I was both physically and mentally. I have lost over 50lbs and still losing and I am down to a size 8 from a 16!
I have incorporated running into my life now and ran my VERY FIRST 5K. My mental state has also changed for the better. I always have a smile on my face and feel so much happier despite still going through personal problems. My children and co-workers have noticed a big difference in my confidence since taking Zumba. My co-workers tell me that Zumba is my “drug of choice”.
Another benefit is the many wonderful women I have met in class. We encourage each other both in and out of class and I have established life long friendships that I will treasure forever. I have to give alot of credit for my success to Kelly. She makes every class new and exciting and I look forward to going each time. I also could not have accomplished getting my confidence back without her encouragement, support, words of wisdom, and pushing me to my limits and then making me push some more. I now “carry” Kelly on my shoulder and hear her voice asking “is that worth it”, if I am gonna make bad food choices. So for anyone who has doubted the benefits of ZUMBA-IT WORKS. Just look at me.
LOVE YA KELLY – thank you so much for all you have done and will do for all of us women, I owe so much to you!! I LOVE MY Z FAMILY !!!
An Anniversary for Kim Rex
Almost exactly 1 year = 65 lbs total lost. I will have completed not 1, but 6 *!!!* 5K races by 2011 !! My personal goal was to complete 1 < smile > !!!
The above particulars all = 1 amazing friend and Zumba instructor! So, this is my year in review, and to this I say THANK YOU Kelly Powell; could not have accomplished any of this without your help and encouragement!!!
I have always tried to incorporate exercise into my life. As a child and teenager, sports was a daily part of my life. I found running around 16 and at 47 still enjoy it. As life rolled along bringing work and my children, exercise had to take a back seat many, many times.
Meeting Kelly a year ago opened my eyes. She made me realize that no matter what your day holds, no matter how many different directions you are pulled, it is NOT ok to not make time for you. While that is a concept that is difficult for me to grasp at times, it is real and true. She has given me permission to say, “Not right now, I need to do something for me.”
I have seen countless women transormed before my eyes thanks to her encouragement, her contagious energy, and her genuine concern. She has taken a gym full of strangers and created a strong, committed, and bonded band of women.
On my worst days, I can read a message she has sent on facebook and smile. She has taught me the importance of self- love and for that I am grateful.
Thank you Kelly!

In modern times, “Pied Piper” has come to mean any charismatic person who attracts an enthusiastic following. We have found the Pied Piper of Zumba in Schnecksville. We are a group of women who needed a leader with magical talents to lead us out of our homes and on to the dance floor.
‘We’re following a strange melody
We’re all summoned by a tune
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon…….
We’re following the piper’
The Piper by ABBA
You can put off taking care of your body for only so long. Eventually you will have to pay the piper!
GOD BLESS YOU Kelly for always being there to cheer and guide us on…..You are a very special woman…..
I am probably the oldest member of our Zumba neighborhood and I just wanted to say, good-bye aches and pains, hello strength and endurance! I owe it to Kelly and Beto!……Keep on DANCING WITH KDP!
My Zumba story…Fall of 2009 I was feeling pretty bad about how I looked due to how bad I had let my eating habits get and how little I was exercising. My “loose” pants were the only pair left that fit comfortably. It was bad and I was ready to change. I was not going to buy bigger clothes. I started eating better, yogurt for breakfast, fish and salad for lunch, smaller portions at dinner and no more night time snacking.
I started doing some weights and crunches at home and walking. I lost a few pounds and was feeling better. Then I saw a friend from work who I had not seen in a while, she looked FANTASTIC. I asked what she was doing. Her answer was “Weight Watchers and Zumba”. I knew what I needed to be eating and I knew I needed to do more for exercise. The gym wouldn’t work, it was too hard to get there consistently without the kids and a gym with childcare was too expensive. I didn’t want home equipment or DVD’s because I knew I would get bored. It was winter and walking outside was ending due to time change. I had taken aerobics at LCCC in the past but, I got bored by those routines too.
I had never heard of Zumba and Deb’s class was in Easton which would not work for me either. But, she really loved it and she lost weight in the classes. On the drive home from work I saw a sign on Route 309, “Zumba classes” with an arrow pointing down the road. I checked the website, made a phone call and got the information on the classes. The girl who called me back had a friend teaching on Wed/Sun but she said another teacher was there on Tues/Sat. The Tuesday/Saturday classes worked better for me so, I went that Saturday, giving up my precious “sleep in Saturdays”.
My first class was Saturday 3/13/10, Kelly Powell was the instructor and the class was AWESOME!! I wondered how exactly someone had that much energy at 8AM on a Saturday. I had no idea what I was doing but, I did my best and just kept moving. There were SO many women at the class, even more on the Tuesday night classes which were 1- ½ hours. I loved Zumba right away and I knew I would be back. I talked to Kelly after class and she was a huge motivator and inspiration. I was super sore the next 2 days but, it was a “good” sore. I bought a punch card the next Tuesday. I have been going almost every Tuesday/Saturday since. I love that I can take the kids if I need to because there is plenty of space for them to run around and play. It is the 3 hours a week I take for myself and I don’t give it up too often.
Mike got me a couple pencil skirts for my birthday late March 2010. They were too tight. I would not return them, I said I was going to lose weight. They don’t fit now either, now they are too big. I was SO proud of myself when they finally fit me. I had never worn a pencil skirt before. I have dropped 2 jean sizes but, probably really 3 since everything was so tight on me when I started exercising. I was never a huge exerciser before now. But, since I have started I have even taken classes on vacation. Zumba is a great, fun workout. It is a great stress reliever and feeling fit and looking good is very empowering. It is never boring because Kelly changes the playlist every class and there are always new songs to keep us on our toes. She will weigh and measure us to help us reach our goals. She sends out inspirational messages and helps all of us stay on track. She is a great inspiration for all of us and the best Zumba instructor there is. I am happy to have met her and become friends with her.
There are inspirational stories all over the class. So many milestones have been reached and there are so many happy faces in class week after week. Late last summer I was out walking and started thinking that it was too easy and I should try running. I slowly built up my endurance to running my entire route. I ran a mile with my son Michael before Thanksgiving 2010. I have completed 3-5K’s since spring and I am signed up for another one with the Zumba crew. I used to have a lot more foot and back pain; it has gone away over the past year and a half. I am in better shape now than I have ever been and, more importantly, I have made great friends over the past year and a half!! I am very passionate about Kelly’s Zumba classes and I talk about them a lot. I love to see new people join and become regulars and learn why we all love it so much!
A quick little story…last September, I wanted to add some cardio to my regular weight training regime. Not really looking to lose any more weight cause I thought I was pretty satisfied with the 50 that I lost the two years prior. Well, I saw a little weight coming off, so I decided to try to eat a little bit healthier, again! Then I saw that I could start to jump on one foot with the fear of falling right down! (I told Obe and he just laughs because I constantly fall, just walking!!)
So, since I was going regularly to Zumba, I then became an addict! Huh…I am always making my plans around Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday classes! Then, I thought I would resolve to lose another 50. Well, as of this writing, I am down 99 lbs. in 3 years.
I have gained so much confidence, strength and endurance that I never thought I would. I have walked 2 – 60 mile 3-day’s and 2 5K’s over this past spring. However, the one thing that I absolutely love above all the weight loss, confidence, strength and endurance is the friendships that I have formed! It’s so much more to me than just an exercise! I absolutely love all the new z-peeps in my life. I would walk to and through hell and back for all of you and I know that you would all do the same for me!
And that, my friend, is what you have given to me…words will never, ever show my deepest gratitude and indebtedness to Kelly and all the rest of the z-ladies.
I was…at the point of realizing I needed to make significant changes to my lifestyle I’ve grown accustomed to, as well as add some form of physical stimulation that I would not get bored with as I have so many times in the past. An acquaintance recommended this “new form of exercise” called ZUMBA. Someone told me it is a Latin form of dance. I looked up the definition only to find it meant “buzzing like a bee.” ME??? Dance? Latin music? Buzz like a bee? NEVER would this be something I would enjoy not to mention….stick with for a long period of time, or even long enough to see any results. My dear friend, Linda Luckenbill told me about this energetic woman from the college that instructs this “zumba” form of exercise and invited me to attend a class with her on a cold winter’s night in early January. I had recently had a hysterectomy and had taken on even more weight during my recovery. My job requires me to be in decent physical shape for potentially dangerous and demanding situations. I realized the extra weight but keeping me from being the best I could be in many aspects of my life.As a result, I’ve dropped 40 lbs since my first day of zumba in January, 2010 but most importantly my cholesterol reached a desirable level without medications, my overall physical condition has improved, I’m stronger than ever, and have an even better feeling about who I am today! I’ve also met people I can call my “friends” who have stuck with the ultimate goal of being the best they can be! I’ve also had the opportunity to become friends with a crazy, energetic, fabulous person…our Zumba Master, Kelly!
And now I am enjoying life more than every before and working hard to maintain AND enjoying all I’ve lost/gained in the last 1 1/2 years!
I was looking for a way to tone myself up after finally hitting my goal weight…AGAIN.My adult nieces mentioned to me that they were taking Zumba classes in Schnecksville, and that they loved them. They said, ”Aunt Deb, there’s dancing, and great music, you’d really love it”. So, I gave it a try – I attended my first Zumba class with Kelly Powell in January 2011 – my nieces were right…I LOVED it from the start !!!As a result of joining Kelly’s Zumba Fitness classes, I have gained…NO NOT WEIGHT…I have gained, an additional amount of physical energy, a whole new wardrobe (because I dropped 4 sizes in clothing and 32 lbs), a huge amount of new friends and a place to smile and dance 3 to 5 times per week.
All of these ‘gains’ are a wonderful bonus to doing something that I love. I leave Kelly’s classes with a smile on my face and a song (actually, many) in my heart!I now realize that there’s something I am carrying with me each and every day since I’ve met Kelly – I carry it in my mind; it’s a ‘sprinkling of sunshine’ given to me by Kelly…she gives it out to everyone in her classes, (and I suspect, everyone she meets). She shares her sunshine with us in many ways; she pushes us to ‘work as hard as we can during class’– she does so by example, she takes time to share a ‘listening ear’ when one of us needs it, she encourages us to become a unit of women not only people who stand next to each other to exercise, she motivates us with laughter, and she reminds us to ‘Be Good to Ourselves’!
With much admiration and gratefulness,
P.S. Zumba by Kelly, has me feeling better than ever at 59 !!! (Even like wearing bathing suits again.)
You know the saying, “Mother knows best”? I believe in that statement 100% because it was MY mother that introduced me to Kelly’s awesome Zumba class!!! She had been going to Kelly’s class for quite a while and loved it. She kept telling me she knew I would like it and I should try it! I kept putting it off because like all of us, my schedule was already so busy. As a wife and mother of two young girls myself, and with my 2 part-time jobs, I just didn’t think I had the time.
Well, thank goodness I listened to my mother and made the time to go that one Tuesday evening in October 2010 because I can’t imagine my life now without Zumba!!! I stood in the back with my mom that first class, tried my best, and just knew I was going to be coming back. The more I went, the more I loved it! I became more comfortable with the moves each and every class and I gradually made my way to the front of the class!!!!
Kelly’s class is SO MUCH FUN! I love Kelly’s energy. I love her facial expressions; I love her enthusiasm; I love her sense of humor; I love her confidence; and I love her love of Zumba. I am a better person, wife, and mother now than I was this time last year. I am more fit, more toned, have more energy, and am more confident. Take the time for yourself and come party with us– you’ll be glad you did.
I have always been a believer that people walk into your life for a reason. Because of this, I am grateful to have met our Zumba Instructor, Kelly Powell. Prior to taking her classes, I found myself doing things that I always said I never would. Almost two years ago, I lost my mother suddenly due to a heart attack. I remember that phone call like it was yesterday. I never got to tell her that I loved her one last time and I often found myself feeling alone, depressed, and angry. I started to question my goals, wants, and dreams and often wondered if the decisions I made in my own life were the right ones. I stopped being the person I was in order to grieve the unthinkable loss of my mother. Each day became harder and harder and with that my entire body seemed to shift. In February 2011, my partner at work told me about a class she had been taking. It sounded fun and like something I would like. After the loss of my mother, I decided to give up coaching two sports to allow myself the time I needed to grieve the loss of my mother and somehow ‘find myself’ again. So, time wasn’t an excuse and I certainly needed to get off of the couch! I attended my first class thinking, “I can do this. I was a two sport athlete for years.” I walked out of that class more motivated then I had been in fifteen months. Since then I have lost just over fifteen pounds. Most people talk about their exercise routines as if it were a chore. I think of mine as a chance to ‘Shake it’ and not worry about all the other ‘stuff’ that occurs each day. Through Kelly’s guidance, Zumba has given me a chance to get my life back together. She has shown me how to pick up the pieces of my own struggles and work on ‘being good to myself.’ I look forward to seeing her and all the other fabulous women that take her classes. Kelly’s class allows us to share a common goal and enjoy some laughs in between. The energy and enthusiasm that Kelly provides not only helps me through my darkest days but also reminds me of the person my mother wanted me to become. Kelly is an inspiration to so many and truly exemplifies the notion that any goal is attainable if you just allow yourself the chance to reach it. Thank you, Kelly, for showing me how to get my groove back! With much gratitude, Amy
